Generator Installation in Winchester, VABackup power wired safely, for the outages the Valley actually gets

Ice storms, summer thunderstorms and a tree on the line can leave homes around Winchester dark for hours or longer, and on a well that means no water either. Winchester Electrician wires standby generators and portable generator hookups so the house keeps running, safely.

What we install

Automatic standby generators with a transfer switch, manual transfer switches and interlock kits for portable generators, outdoor power inlets, and the circuits that decide what stays on: well pump, heating system, refrigerator, sump pump, lights and the outlets you actually use.

How the install goes

  • Sit down on what needs to stay on in an outage
  • Size the generator to that load
  • Pick the location for clearance, noise and fuel
  • Install the transfer switch or interlock at the panel
  • Coordinate the gas or propane connection
  • Permit and inspection handled where the job needs one
  • Full test under load with the utility power off
  • Walk you through running it and looking after it

Why the transfer switch matters

A generator plugged into a dryer outlet with a homemade cord backfeeds the utility line. That can kill a lineman working to restore your power, and it can destroy the generator when the power comes back. A transfer switch or a listed interlock makes it physically impossible for the two sources to meet. It is the part of the job that is not optional.

Standby or portable

A standby unit starts on its own within seconds and runs on natural gas or propane, which suits anyone on a well, working from home, or with medical equipment in the house. A portable with a proper inlet and interlock costs far less and covers the essentials if you are home to roll it out. We price both honestly.

The fault found, then a price

The electrician tests instead of guessing, explains the cause in plain words, and gives you the cost to fix it before touching anything.

FAQ

Generator Installation questions

  • What size generator do I need?

Depends on what you want running. Essentials only is a much smaller unit than the whole house with central air. We add up the loads with you and size from that.

  • Can a portable generator run my well pump?

Often, yes, if it puts out 240 volts and has the starting capacity. We check the pump’s requirements against the generator before wiring the inlet.

  • Is an interlock kit legal?

A listed interlock made for your panel, installed correctly, is an accepted way to connect a portable generator. A double ended cord into a dryer outlet is not, anywhere.
